‘Be Magnificent. Walthamstow School of Art 1957 – 1967’


Bringing together the most influential creative talents of the 1950s and 60s, here at the original School of Art.

The William Morris Gallery in partnership with arts agency Create presents ‘Be Magnificent’, a new exhibition that reveals the history of Walthamstow School of Art and features a diverse range of photography, painting, music, fashion design and film.

Walthamstow School of Art cultivated some of the most influential creative talents of the 1950s and 60s. Leading names in art, fashion, music and film studied and taught at the former School, now Waltham Forest College includes Peter Blake, Ian Dury, Ken Russell, Peter Greenaway, Celia Birtwell, Marion Foale, Eamon Everall, Keith Albarn, Laurie Lewis, Sally Tuffin and George Brunell.

As part of ‘Be Magnificent’, alumni and former tutors will return to deliver workshops here, at the original School from Wednesday 5th to Friday 14th July 2017. Alumni and leading artists including Keith Albarn (b.1939), Eamon Everall (b.1940), Keith Albarn (b.1939) and Laurie Lewis (b.1944) will be exhibit their original work at the legacy of the School, teach classes as well as explore their creative imagination.

Bringing together the early work of these influential artists and designers for the first time will capture the energy, excitement and dynamism, and show the result of access to free universal education. It's completely free, you are welcome to come along with your friends and family.
