Teens and Young People ‘Have Their Say’ at the Mayor’s First Youth Summit

2

Young people across the borough attended the first Youth Summit hosted by Mayor Cllr Yemi Osho at Waltham Forest College on Thursday 1 February 2018.

The summit was a youth-led event which offered a platform for students to come together with their peers to discuss the key issues and challenges that impact their lives and to explore solutions. It was organised by the Youth Mayors Team, the council Youth engagement team and the Mayor’s office with the Inspire programme.

Young people from Kelmscott  School, Sir George Monoux College, Leyton Sixth form, Waltham Forest College and others, came together to share their views on how positive change can be created in the borough.

Youth facilitators from the Youth Mayor’s Team, Young Advisors, Youth Independent Advisory Group and Waltham Forest College led small groups in debates on challenges, opportunities and solutions for young people.

Luke Doyley, Deputy Youth Mayor and Young Advisor for Waltham Forest said: “This event is one of the many needed opportunities for young people to get a say on the move forward in the borough; it shows that the authorities do care for young people.”

The Worshipful Mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Yemi Osho said: “It’s great to see so many young people participating in discussions regarding issues and challenges they face. It is imperative that we work with our young people to have a voice and empower them to attain their potential. Not only for their own sake but for the community and society as a whole".

A follow up event a ‘Marketplace of Opportunities’ will take place at Waltham Forest Town Hall on Saturday 24th  March bringing together young people and stakeholders best suited to deliver the outcomes and key themes of the summit.
