The Construction Skills Entry Level 3 qualification will allow you to prepare for a career in the Construction Industry. Students will gain an understanding of the industry in general as well as an insight into the various career options.

We have strong links within the industry and work with companies such as Cody Docks, Taylor Wimpy, K&D Joinery, the Standard Hotel & Society of Public Health Engineers.

Waltham Forest College is putting sustainability at the heart of everything that we do, and in this course, you will also learn about sustainable materials, re-using and upcycling materials within a construction environment, waste management, different types of insulation for construction, passive houses (membranes to avoid heat loss). Additionally, within plumbing courses you will learn about air source heat pumps, the benefit of using rainwater harvesting, and solar thermal integration into new housing developments.

The course is scheduled 3 days per week and 75% of the course will be practical.

  • Sector Overview

    The Construction Industry is generally defined as a key sector of the economy. The industry plays an important role in the economic growth of the country and London has the largest share of the nation's construction work.

    Upon completing your course, you will have lots of employment opportunities such as working on a new housing development, skyscraper, shopping centre or urban regeneration project. Our courses will prepare you for these challenges.

  • Entry Requirements

    The entry requirements for this course are:

    • 4 GCSEs at Grade 2 (E) or above including maths and English
    • Assessment and interview

    If required, you will study GCSE or Functional Skills maths and/or English alongside your course so you can progress onto the next level.

    This course consists of the following modules:

    • Sustainability in construction
    • Bricklaying
    • Carpentry
    • Wall and floor tiling
    • Painting and decorating
    • Plumbing 
    • Electrical
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed via:

    • Written tasks
    • Practical activity
  • Enrichment

    To further enhance your progression, you will actively participate in internal and external skills competitions, such as SkillBuild.

    You will take part in trips and visits such as Future Build and UK Construction Week. You will also have access to key employers that deliver guest lectures to help build your industry knowledge and contacts.

  • Work Experience

    You must complete 36 hours (1 week) of external work placement which is an essential part of the programme. Some of the opportunities will include placements with employers such as Cody Docks, Taylor Wimpy, K&D Joinery, the Standard Hotel & Society of Public Health Engineers.
