Waltham Forest College is extremely proud of the achievements of our learners and are delighted to have been recognised at the prestigious Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards 2024. The awards, which recognise exceptional individuals and organisations that are helping Londoners to develop skills, realise their potential, and advance in their careers, were presented at a ceremony at City Hall.

Ellie Vinton, a former student of Waltham Forest College, was nominated by the college and beat tough competition to secure the Inspirational Adult Learner of the Year award. Ellie’s journey of personal and professional transformation began when she was unemployed and enrolled in the Railway Engineering programme at the College in partnership with Rail Employers and JCP. Having struggled with academic challenges in school and lacking confidence, Ellie’s tutors worked closely with her to rebuild her self-esteem, offering her the support and encouragement she needed to thrive.

Through her hard work and determination, Ellie passed her exams and secured a permanent position with Trackwork Resources Ltd, a leading rail services company. She quickly rose through the ranks, achieving promotion to team leader and now runs her own track team. Ellie has continued to gain the respect of her colleagues and managers, and she is currently pursuing a specialist industry management qualification, with a clear career path ahead.

Beyond her own achievements, Ellie has become a passionate advocate for women in the traditionally male-dominated rail and engineering industries. Ellie’s story is one of resilience, growth, and empowerment, and she continues to be a role model for others looking to change their lives through education and training.

Waltham Forest College was also recognised for its valuable impact supporting adult learners within local communities and was highly commended in the Mayor of London Distinguished Provider of Adult Education awards

Janet Gardner, Principal and CEO of Waltham Forest College, commented:

I am delighted the valuable impact of adult education has been recognised and celebrated at The Mayor of London Awards. The Further Education Sector plays a pivotal role supporting, skills, growth and the economy and I am so proud that Ellie’s story has highlighted how transformational this can be.

Now in their third year, the Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards 2024 received a record 329 nominations across 10 categories. The ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of adult learners across the capital, was hosted by Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth. The event brought together more than 140 Londoners, including award winners, representatives from businesses, community organisations, and leaders from the Further Education (FE) sector.
