Waltham Forest College has proudly been awarded College of Sanctuary status, a prestigious recognition of its ongoing commitment to being a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment for people who have been forcibly displaced from their home countries.

This national accolade celebrates the College’s inclusive approach, which embeds sanctuary values into all aspects of its educational provision. From practical support services to a strong culture of solidarity, Waltham Forest College demonstrates a deep commitment to supporting refugees and people seeking sanctuary in the UK.

An essential part of this journey has been the active involvement of the College’s student community. Class Representatives and the Student Union Welfare and Wellbeing Officer, have played a vital role in shaping a culture of inclusion and support. Their proactive engagement - from listening to student voices and raising awareness of sanctuary-related issues, to driving peer-led initiatives and promoting wellbeing - has significantly contributed to creating a welcoming and safe environment for all students.

Reflecting on the achievement, Stella Hawkins, Assistant Principal, said:
“Waltham Forest College’s journey to becoming a College of Sanctuary has been both inspiring and deeply meaningful. Sanctuary values are not just present - they are embedded in our curriculum, our culture, and our community. This award recognises the strength, resilience, and contributions of our sanctuary-seeking students, and renews our commitment to raising awareness and championing inclusion.”

The College has taken strategic steps to embed this commitment, including the formation of a Strategic Sanctuary Steering Group and the appointment of designated College of Sanctuary Champions, who lead initiatives that promote safety, solidarity, and student voice.

This milestone reflects Waltham Forest College’s aspiration to be not just a place of learning, but a true sanctuary – where every individual is supported to thrive, contribute, and achieve their full potential.
