This Qualification enables registration with MCS for work under the scope of MIS 3005-I (The Heat Pump Standard - Installation).

The heat pump course is specifically aimed at existing plumbing and heating engineers and giving them the necessary training to upskill their existing skills to install heat pumps. The course allows delegates to continue to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment within the Renewable Sector.

The objective of this course is for delegates to demonstrate they know and understand the requirements for installing heat pump systems. This will Include the different operational characteristics, the preparatory work required for heat pumps installations and the requirements to install, commission and hand over heat pump systems.

  • Sector Overview

    The Electrical Sector is on the rise around the world and in the UK. Its strong links to a sustainable future have increased the variety and quantity of jobs on offer.

    A skills shortage in the UK means over 50% of advertised vacancies within Electrical Installation are not being filled. This makes now the ideal time to get skilled and enter a career where the number of job opportunities is increasing.

    Typical tasks for electricians can include, installing lighting and power systems, including maintenance on domestic and commercial premises. New housing developments, increases in infrastructure and new government policy means there are lots of opportunities related to sustainability such as solar panel systems and the UK's electric vehicle network. Our courses will prepare you for these challenges.

  • Entry Requirements

    The entry requirements for this course are:

    • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification; or
    • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
    • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification; or
    • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification; or
    • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification

    And if not included in the above qualification: 

    • Water Regulations/Water Byelaws (WRAS) 
    • A pre-requisite recommendation is Low Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems (LTHWHS)
  • What will I study?

    This course consists of the following modules:

    • The learner will know the preparatory work required for the installation of an air source heat pump
    • The learner will know the common requirements for the installation of an air source heat pump connected to hydraulic emitter circuits
    • The learner will install heat pump units (non-refrigeration units)
    • The learner will test and commission an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)
    • The learner will be able to undertake the non-refrigerant circuit routine service and maintenance of an air source heat pump system (non-refrigerant circuits)

    You will be assessed via: 

    • Written tasks
    • Online exam 
    • Practical Task
