Waltham Forest College is proud to announce that its Chair of Governors, Paul Butler, has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Further Education.

The honour recognises Paul’s exceptional dedication to creating opportunity, championing inclusion and transforming lives through education and community action. Throughout a distinguished career spanning public service, further education and the voluntary sector, he has become a widely respected figure whose leadership has influenced colleges, communities and governance practice across London and beyond.

As Chair of Waltham Forest College, Paul has provided visionary leadership during a period of significant growth and transformation, helping to strengthen the college’s reputation as a leading, community-focused institution committed to excellence, inclusion and social mobility. His unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives has shaped both the strategic direction and values of the college.

The award comes at a particularly poignant moment as Paul nears retirement from his role as Chair, marking a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to public service, community empowerment and educational opportunity.

Alongside his work in further education governance, Paul has dedicated much of his career to supporting diverse communities and advancing equality through voluntary and civic leadership as Chief Executive and Director within the voluntary sector.

Paul has also played an influential role nationally through his work with the Association of Colleges and the Education and Training Foundation as a Governance Adviser, supporting governance reviews, mediation, leadership development and sector improvement activity across further education institutions.

A passionate advocate for inclusive leadership and representation, Paul has consistently championed the importance of colleges reflecting and understanding the communities they serve. His work has strengthened governance practice across the sector while helping ensure that learners from all backgrounds are supported to thrive and succeed.

Paul’s longstanding commitment to public service began early in his career through roles in the civil service before moving into leadership positions across the voluntary and community sector. Over many years, he has worked tirelessly to improve opportunities for underrepresented communities and has remained a passionate advocate for fairness, inclusion and lifelong learning.

Under Paul’s leadership, Waltham Forest College has continued to strengthen its role at the heart of the local community, supporting learners through education, skills development and pathways to employment, higher education and personal success.
