Waltham Forest College is extremely proud to announce that our Principal and Chief Executive Officer, Janet Gardner, has been awarded an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in His Majesty The King's 2025 Birthday Honours List.

The prestigious honour recognises Janet's exceptional services to Further Education.

Janet is a respected and experienced strategic leader with over 20 years of service in the Further Education Sector and has a strong commitment to social impact.

Since joining Waltham Forest College as Principal and CEO in 2020, she has led the institution through a period of significant transformation with a strong vision and high ambitions for its students, staff and local communities.  Under her leadership, the College has achieved an outstanding Ofsted grade and an outstanding financial health rating and is now recognised as one of the highest performing Further Education Colleges in the country, as well as being recognised as one of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work.

Beyond institutional leadership, Janet's influence extends across the wider education and skills landscape. She serves as:

  • Co-Chair of the London Anchor Institutions Network (LAIN) Hiring and Skills Group
  • A member of the Mayor of London's Partnership Board
  • Co-opted Board Member of Confederation of British Industry London Council
  • Chair of the Association of Colleges London Committee
  • A member of the National Association of Colleges Board

Reflecting on the award, Janet Gardner said:

'This honour reflects the collective commitment and dedication of everyone at Waltham Forest College and the wider FE sector, who work tirelessly every day to transform lives through education. I am proud to represent a sector that plays such a vital role in driving skills, opportunities and equity, for individuals and wider communities to thrive.

I am a product of Further Education, having attended Further Education Colleges both as a young person leaving school and as an adult to retrain. I am truly humbled and honoured to receive this recognition for the sector that has given me so many opportunities.'
