Painting and Decorating Level 1
The Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating is designed to introduce students to the Construction Industry through practical and theory-based training. It provides the fundamental skills needed for surface preparation, painting, wallpapering and decorative finishes. The course is ideal for those looking to start a career in the painting and decorating trade.

The Construction Industry is defined as a key sector of the economy. The industry plays an important role in the economic growth of the country and London has the largest share of the nation’s construction work.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for this course are:
- 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English and maths
- Assessment and interview
If required, you will study GCSE or Functional Skills English and/or maths alongside your course so you can progress to the next level.

What will I study?
This course consists of the following modules:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
- Preparing surfaces for decoration
- Applying paint systems using brushes and rollers
- Applying foundation and plain wallpapers
- Producing decorative finishes (eg sponging, rag rolling, stencilling)

Enrichment
To further enhance your progression, you will actively participate in internal and external skills competitions, such as SkillBuild.
You will also take part in trips and visits such as Future Build and UK Construction Week. You will have access to key employers that deliver guest lectures and practical sessions to help build your industry knowledge and contacts.
Our Student Common Room is a great place to unwind and relax during your breaks. It features pool tables, table tennis, a gaming corner and lots of comfy sofas so you can refresh before your next lesson.
Themed events are held in the Common Room so you can get the best experience of being a Waltham Forest College student.

Work Experience
You will be supported to complete 36-hours of work placement with an external employer linked to the industry of study. This is a mandatory aspect of your programme.
