It is accessible to learners of all ages who may want to understand more about working in health and social care. It aims to introduce some basic concepts of caring and preparation for employment in the sector.

  • Sector Overview

    The largest employer in the UK Healthcare Sector is the NHS, which employs more than 1.5 million people - placing it in the top five largest workforces in the world. There are more than 350 different roles available within the NHS. A significant proportion of the sector's workforce is in independent healthcare. In addition to their private sector functions, these providers are increasingly contracted to provide services on behalf of the NHS.

  • Entry Requirements

    The entry requirements for this course are: 

    •  GCSE in English grade 4 or above / or equivalent
    •  Assessment and interview

    All students will be required to attend an interview demonstrating their commitment to the programme, evidencing their qualifications on entry, and sit a diagnostic test in English.

    As part of this programme an enhanced DBS check will be required for placement and as an industry requirement (provided by the College).

  • What will I study?

    This course aims to introduce knowledge around the following areas relating to working in adult social care:

    • Communication
    • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
    • Personal Development 
    • Role of the social care worker
    • Handling Information 
    • Health and Safety 
    • Safeguarding
    • Duty of care
    • Person-centred approaches.

    It relates to the knowledge elements covered in the mandatory units of the Health and Social Care Diploma at Level 3.

    Learners progressing to the Health and Social Care Diploma at Level 3 will therefore have gained the underpinning knowledge for these units.

    You will be assessed via:

    • Written Assessment
    •  Presentations
    •  Practical activity
    • Study visits
    • Team building activities

    To achieve this qualification, learners must complete all 9 mandatory units. All assignments will be assessed via a portfolio of evidence, graded Pass/Fail.

  • Enrichment

    To further enhance your progression, you will actively participate in skills competitions, such as the Big Idea Challenge and Skills London. You will be involved in taking part in trips and visits, such as The Bank of England and attend Business Conferences.

     You will also have access to key employers that will deliver guest lectures to build your industry knowledge and create your future. Our Student Common Room is a great place to unwind and relax during your breaks.

    It features pool tables, table tennis, a gaming corner and lots of comfy sofas so you can refresh before your next lesson. Themed events are held in the Common Room so you can get the best experience of being a Waltham Forest College student.

  • Work Experience

    All students must complete a minimum of 100 hours working with an employer(s) on an industry placement.
