The Certificate in Bricklaying Level 1 qualification will allow you to prepare for a career in the Bricklaying Industry. Students will gain an understanding of the industry in general as well as an insight into the various career options.
We have strong links within the industry and work with companies such as Morgan Sindall, Taylor Wimpy & Cody Docks.
Waltham Forest College is putting sustainability at the heart of everything that we do, and in this course, you will also learn about sustainable materials, re-using and upcycling materials within a construction environment, waste management, different types of insulation for construction, passive houses (membranes to avoid heat loss). Additionally, within plumbing courses you will learn about air source heat pumps, the benefit of using rainwater harvesting, and solar thermal integration into new housing developments.
The course is scheduled 3 days per week and 75% of the course will be practical.
Bricklayers lay bricks, pre-cut stone and concrete blocks in mortar. They construct, extend and repair domestic and commercial buildings, and other structures such as foundations, walls, chimneys or decorative masonry work.
Bricklaying offers a real sense of achievement. At the end of a project, you'll see the results and be able to say, 'I built that'.
Within Waltham Forest, and the wider London region, there are always new projects such as new housing developments, shopping centres, commercial/industrial centres or urban regeneration projects. Our courses will prepare you for these challenges.
The entry requirements for this course are:
- 4 GCSEs at Grade 3 (E) or above including maths and English
- Assessment and interview
If required, you will study GCSE or Functional Skills maths and/or alongside your course so you can progress onto the next level.

- Principals in construction
- Block laying activities
- Bricklaying activities
- Cavity walling activities
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed via:
- Written tasks
- Practical activity
To further enhance your progression, you will actively participate in internal and external skills competitions, such as SkillBuild.
You will take part in trips and visits such as Future Build and UK Construction Week. You will also have access to key employers that deliver guest lectures to help build your industry knowledge and contacts.
Waltham Forest College is an accredited CSCS Test Centre and we will help you to obtain a CSCS card.
As part of your course, you will learn about employability, sustainability & energy efficiency and health and safety which will provide you with the most up-to-date knowledge to gain work within the industry.
You must complete 36 hours (1 week) of external work placement which is an essential part of the programme. Some of the opportunities will include placements with employers such as Morgan Sindall, Taylor Wimpy & Cody Docks.
Successful completion on this course will lead to:
- Bricklaying Level 2
- Apprenticeship training programmes
