The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Business will allow you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of business and provides a good foundation for progression onto the Level 2 business programme.

This programme will help to prepare you for future work within the industry by developing vital business skills alongside your confidence and professionalism.

Waltham Forest College is putting sustainability at the heart of everything that we do, and in this course, you will gain knowledge on the importance of entrepreneurs to the economy, social change, and solutions for efficient technology systems. Social enterprise, and how businesses can contribute positively to the climate will be explained through discussion on sustainable supply chain sourcing, utilising digital marketing activities for businesses and meeting government initiatives and targets for the environment.

  • Sector Overview

    The Business Sector is incredibly broad, meaning graduates with the right qualifications have huge scope when choosing a career. Specialist routes may include but are not limited to: 

    • Marketing
    • Administration
    • Human Resources
    • Operations
    • Customer Service
    • Telecommunications
    • Financial

    There were 5.5 million private sector businesses in the UK at the start of 2022. Most of these businesses are small, with less than 50 employees, 35,900 are medium sized, and 7,700 are large organisations. 

    Small businesses employ nearly 48% of the population, while large organisations employ 39%.

  • Entry Requirements

    The entry requirements for this course are:

    • 4 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above including maths and English
    • You must also achieve Entry Level 3 in your initial assessment

    You will be required to attend an informal interview which may include completing an assessment based on your prior qualifications.

    You will be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment and enthusiasm to study.

  • What will I study?

    This course consists of the following modules: 

    • Researching a topic
    • Finding out about businesses in your area
    • Product branding
    • Presenting a business idea
    • Recording income and expenditure
    • Contributing to running an event
    • Communicating with customers
    • Being organised
    • Developing a Personal Progression Plan
    • Working with others
  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed via:

    • Written assignments
    • Presentations
    • Practical task
    • Contribution to group work
  • Enrichment

    To further enhance your progression, you will actively participate in skills competitions, such as the Big Idea Challenge and Skills London. You will be involved in taking part in trips and visits, such as The Bank of England and attend Business Conferences.

    You will also have access to key employers that will deliver guest lectures to build your industry knowledge and contacts.

  • Work Experience

    You must complete 36 hours (1 week) of external work placement which is an essential part of the programme. Some of the opportunities will include placements with employers such as Ernest & Young, Future Connect and MTC Learning.
