Career Prospects Increase for Jobless Young People On College Programme

Waltham Forest College Prince’s Trust Team Programme on track to double numbers of vulnerable young people’s impacted.

The Prince’s Trust’s assessors judged the College’s programme as ‘good with outstanding features’ in November 2017.

Unemployed 18 to 24-year-olds, some with mental health and learning difficulties, go through the College’s Employment, Teamwork and Community Skills programme to improve their career and further education prospects.

Delivery Partner Manager, Omur Derelikoylu said: “Next year, we want to help 90 young people and aim to become a centre of excellence for Prince’s Trust in North East London.

“We are also negotiating a potential partnership with Metropolitan Police in Newham. We intend to work collaboratively with Metropolitan Police to support more young people and positively contribute towards alleviating youth-related crime in London.”

The Team Programme develops young people’s self-discipline, leadership, teamwork, and communication and employability skills to boost their career and education prospects.

The current Prince’s Trust Team consists of a Delivery Partner Manager, Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader and a series of volunteers who are genuinely interested in making a difference in young people’s lives.

Explaining how the College team made improvements, Omur said: “We had clear and positively challenging expectations for all staff members and students. This was paramount to progressively sustaining our high quality provision.

“We also prioritised young people who were motivated to join our programme and had a positive and committed attitude. We expect them all to try their best, value the community, respect each other and be responsible at all times.

“Our young people benefit from guest speakers, day visits and work experience opportunities due to our positive working relationship with all our partners.”

A number of students who completed the programme last month shared their personal journey with staff, friends and family during the end of term presentation.

The next Prince’s Trust Team Programme at the College will run from Monday 7th May – Friday 27th July 2018.

The College works in partnership with highly reputable employers such as Royal Bank of Scotland, the Metropolitan Police, St John Ambulance, Her Majesty’s Revenues and Customs and ARUP.
